A little attitude...

His expressions are getting better everyday, which makes the pictures that much more fun to take. This was taken after a crying spell that included him shaking his fists. Apparently he was a little upset with me!

I have a secret....

This is the first picture of a near smile. My friend Meredith says it looks like he has a secret. I could only imagine what his secret is, I have a dirty diaper, I'm not going to sleep tonight, or even, daddy pick me up and play with me so I can puke on you! It's any one's guess really. But I am glad that Eric captured this moment, because looking at this on little sleep makes him 1/2 way worth all the effort in the middle of the night. Okay so he's totally worth it, but I'm just a little bitter over losing so much sleep!

Big Boy Clothes

Now that he's 9 pounds we can start to explore some more fun clothes, because let's face it no one buys a ton of newborn clothes. So today we put on this striped onesie from Target with some nice comfy pants!!! I love all the big boy clothes, now if the weather would only warm up so we can put him in some cute shorts and tee shirts!

A-ok

All is well. Dr. Schneider called C has a billirubin count of 6 (for reference he left the hospital as a 8 and it climbed as high as 21, so 6 we're okay with). His other blood work came back great, his liver is functioning properly and it ruled out hepatitis (which I'm not sure how he would have gotten that anyway!!) We have orders to continue feeding and the levels will drop on their own it just may take some additional time.

So another medical situation is behind us.

Wheew!

Diagnosis????

The poor little guy has acid reflux just like his parents and grandparents. He was arching his back and eating every hour, so I knew something was amiss. Eric also pointed out that he was spitting up a ton, and it was coming out in a projectile manner. So we went to see Dr. Schneider, our pediatrician. Yep, sure enough he has a bit of acid, so he gets acid reducing drops twice a day. Today is day two and he seems to be back to normal, whatever normal for him might be.

The other thing is that Dr. Schneider thought C was still a bit yellow. Sooo... that's right more blood work. He didn't seem too concerned 99% of time it's something called breastmilk (or it is breastfeeding) jaundice and it's just a side effect of my milk being a little incompatible with his system. The other 1% of the time it's a liver function problem or a hematocrit issue. So we're trying not to worry about the 1%, but of course as parents worrying is our second full time job (the first being taking care of him).

Results will be in tomorrow, and I'll update the blog as soon as I know something. :-)

I also thought twice about posting this because I wanted it to be a happy reflection of his first year, but then I thought that it should be an accurate and true account, so it made the blog.

night....

PNO #3

Eric and I got another PNO (Parents Night Out) courtsey of Grandma Juanda. She comes every 2 weeks or so and lets Eric and I head out on the town to go to dinner just the two of us. It's a great relief to be able to have some couple time, even if all we do is talk about C.

Before we left I snapped a couple photos of C having snuggly time with Grandma, here's one where she said she was "looking at him adoringly" after I called her a "faker" for sleeping.

New Friends

After people ask how we are doing and how C is growing the next question is generally: "How is Gunner adjusting?"

Well I'm pleased to report that Gunner is adjusting just fine, he's a bit miffed that he stays outside sometimes, but he stayed outside before there was just no one home to hear his whimpers and howling (yes, our black lab howls).

He's given up on sleeping in our bedroom, even though that's where his bed is, the baby crying is just too much for him. But we also make sure that Gunner still gets his attention by continuing our evening walks and giving him some belly rubs.
I can't wait until C is old enough to interact with him, even if it means throwing Cheerios on the floor for him to eat!

One Month

In 2004 the life expectancy of a white male was 75.7 years so using that data caleb has only expended 0.11% of his life, he's got another 907.4 months ahead of him. Amazing how we measure time isn't it?

He has given us a run for our money on some occasions and sometimes we wonder what it is that we have gotten ourselves into, but it's so much easier to snuggle and give him cuddles when he's a good baby, but being a good parent also means you have to be there for the crying spells and sleepless nights.
Overall he's a keeper!

Sleeping Angel

Well what once was our sleeping angel.... has now turned into a crying non-sleeping mess (at least for the last two nights). Thus the blog has suffered.
Tonight we're going to try to keep him awake, usually he takes a very deep nap at 6:30 or 7:00 we hope that by keeping him awake through this nap that he will go down sometime before 11:40. On the upside if this continues we'll have no problem adjusting to the time change when we travel to California!

Laundry Day

Did you ever think that maybe you didn't need that $100 cradle, come on he could just sleep in a laundry basket right????

Tummy Time

C spent some time on his mat yesterday doing some "Tummy Time" (if you want more information see this page: http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/baby/babybehavior/1439985.html) He stayed on his mat for all of about 90 seconds before he started crying. He does a lot of "tummy time" when we hold him on our chests. He really has some strong legs and I am excited (but also fear) the day when he takes off crawling, even though I know that has to be months away, right??

Additionally we missed the blog yesterday because Monday night, April 2nd, C caught a spell of "Devil baby" he was a fusspot for about 3 hours. Mostly he seemed to exhibit signs of gas that just needed to be worked out. I think it's because I ate a lot of dairy that day. I was super concerned that it was the beginning of colic, but last night we had our angel baby back. I hope that the pattern of nice baby continues, and to encourage it I've cut out all dairy from my diet hoping that was the culprit.

Who wears the pants in your house?

In our house Little Man C wears the pants... Today he wore pants for the first time, up until this point it's been one piece outfits. You may ask what's the occasion, well, we went to the grocery store! For those of you who are daily readers, if you find something particularly interesting or funny please feel free to leave a comment as often as you like. I've found a website that will turn a blog into a published book, so after we've finished this blog (perhaps on his first birthday) we'll see about getting it made into a book so that we can save it forever!
Until Tomorrow
XOXOXO

Trophy Season is Almost here!!!

Every April Eric gets all his gear lined out for the Spring Trophy Rockfish season. In 2005 while fishing with his friend Shawn they caught a 42' Rockfish which got them a citation from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The fish was huge!!!!

This season seems to look promising but we'll see how often Eric can get out to fish, the boat is in the water and it's ready to go but Little C might have some different plans.

Eric likes to hold him like a fish possibly because he won't be able to do a lot of fishing this year??? But C doesn't seem to mind. We hope that C enjoys the water and boating as much as we do, and someday maybe he'll catch a fish as big as Daddy's!
